Microsoft Windows Vista, the next version of Windows, is scheduled to arrive in H2 2006. Vista is loaded with new technologies, the most visible being an enhanced graphical user interface. Vista s user interface improves rendering of text, allows smooth, eye-pleasing window transition effects, and utilizes high-resolution icons.

Windows Vista Explorer makes use of high-resolution 256×256 icons. While 256×256 pixels seem to be too much for current displays, Vista is able to dynamically downscale images to any size. By using large icons, Vista Explorer is already prepared for future displays with higher resolution [DPI].

Microsoft plans to release its new Vista operating system to consumers in January 2007. The new operating system is schedule to be released to larger businesses in November 2006.

Although upgrading to Vista is completely optional, QuickBooks users need to understand Vista s compatibility with QuickBooks, because not all versions of QuickBooks will be compatible with the new operating system.

The only version of QuickBooks that is compatible with Vista is QuickBooks 2007. Intuit announced on October 16, 2007, that it is investigating third-party, aka non-Intuit, workarounds for QuickBooks users who are using versions of QuickBooks earlier than 2007. However, no other details were given. Most importantly: Intuit did not announce any plans to update earlier versions of QuickBooks

to be compatible with Vista. Microsoft has been working on Vista for over five years, and a beta of Vista has been available since about July 2005, but Intuit has no plans to update previous years of QuickBooks, not even QuickBooks 2006, which was released in November 2005.

Your computer cost you from hundreds to thousands of dollars, but the computer itself is not the most valuable part. The data on the hard disk is the most valuable part. Unfortunately, backing up with Windows XP Home Edition is not as simple as it should be.

The first step is to choose a backup device. You might choose a tape drive or a DVD drive, but those devices might require drivers to be installed before you could restore from them. The simplest option is to install a

second hard drive in your computer.
